Don't spend those dollars!
When you first start the game they ask you to use your dollars to speed up certain things. Don't! wait the few minutes it takes to complete the task and then go back to the game, this way you can save those first few dollars. Watch-out though, the tutorial might restart you unless you leave the game open while waiting.
Dollars in the game can help skip quests, shorten cooking, harvesting and so on. There are also items and crops that you cant buy with coins.
Dollars can also be earned in the game:
Pumpkins!
They cost dollars! Don't plant them unless you want to spend your cash! There are Sale Desk quests asking for them.
Crops:
They never wither! So you don't have to collect them until you need them. This helps at the beginning because the barn storage is small (100).
Friends
To visit click the letter on the bottom left or the mailbox on your farm.
The game gives you friends and adds more as you level up. You can add friends who play through Facebook but you can only visit them and you cant help each other on your farms.
Sales Desk - The Pink Dot!
I was confused as to what the the dot was, but it turns out that it means you need to use Deluxifiers in your recipe.

How to get Deluxifiers
The first place you are
likely to get a Deluxifier is the pond. (In one of the first land expansions.) There are 3 options for fishing. The first one is free - once a day. (Items can be food, Deluxifier, decorations, trees) The other two charge dollars but have better payoffs. (or so it says - have yet to try it)

You can get Deluxifiers from "Super Animals".There are 2 you can get for free once you expand the land. The first is the Super Bull (from the Calm Acre) and then the Super Stallion (from Enchanted Acre).
"Super Animals" need "Super Feed" in order to give you Deluxifiers.
Expanding:
When you first start off the game you have a triangle of land. There are 12 other squares of land to expand to. To expand your farm you need to receive the quest for that particular piece of land. You will be going in order from cheapest expansion to highest, since the requirement for some expansions is the previous expansion before it.

When you use Deluxifiers the sale price increases. Regular apple juice sells for 12 coins.
